POETRY    NIGHT

Contemporary Poems

Sometime during the middle of November, the topic of contemporary poetry will be broached in Language Arts.  At Poetry Night, “contemporary poetry” means song lyrics.  Anyone who has listened to any music from the 60s has certainly heard how powerful lyrics can be.

Students will be tasked as follows:

1)       Choose two possible songs for interpretation on Poetry Night.  The songs can be from any time period.  What is important is that students select songs that are personally meaningful to them and that communicate a message based upon the same theme as their classical poem.     Please keep in mind that the intention of this assignment is not for the students to compete on who listens to the coolest bands or the coolest songs.  We want students to find a meaningful, interesting, and appropriate song that they wish to study and share with their peers and others.  Duplication of songs will not be allowed.

2) Fill out the Contemporary Song form which lists the two songs.  Have your parent sign the form to indicate that they have viewed your choices and approve of your selections.

3) Locate a copy of the lyrics to each of your song choices.  A helpful website is http://www.songlyrics.com/.  However, lyrics are easily located by googling the name of the song and the word “lyrics.” Sometimes you may also have to include the name of the artist.   For example, if you want the lyrics to “Unwritten,” you might google “natasha beddingfield unwritten lyrics” to successfully locate them.

4) Staple the lyrics to the Contemporary Song form and turn them in at the beginning of Language Arts by Tuesday, November 30.  Unsigned forms will not be accepted.  As with the Classical Poems, students who have unsigned forms will be assigned a song.  Remember that your teachers are old geezers and we’ll be sure to pick music that is meaningful to US, like this.  Or this.  Or maybe even this.  You have been warned.

Please bear in mind that all deadlines may change as time draws closer to the event.

How this works is as follows:

Mrs. Makay and I will meet to look over the lyrics and forms.  We will then meet with you to help you select a song  from your choices.  The reason we will do this is to ensure a variety of songs, artists, and time periods, and to guarantee we can get a copy of the song for Poetry Night.  We will meet with each of you to finalize your choice around Friday, December 3.

Over Winter Break, students are advised to begin memorizing their songs.  Songs must be memorized by Monday, January 10.  After that time, rehearsal for Poetry Night begins in earnest, with teachers conducting spot rehearsals in Language Arts, Literature, and other classes.
